History. moma’s director of design, elliot noyes, wrote a brief that explained his reasons for holding the organic design in home furnishings competition: “in the field of home furnishings, there has been no outstanding design developments in recent years.a new way of living is developing, however, and this requires a fresh approach to the design problems and a new expression. 1940 – 1942, 2004 – present. charles eames and eero saarinen developed the organic chair in 1941.they created the design for the organic design in home furnishings competition organized by the museum of modern art in new york. eames and saarinen were awarded first place in seating as well as first place for their case goods.
